A very basic lesson one might pick up from horror stories is this: Don’t go on vacation in remote locations and expect to have a nice relaxing time. Maybe just don’t go into the woods at all? At least not after dark.
This lesson has not been learned by the family at the center of Elves, a six-episode Danish series premiering on Netflix later this month. En route to their holiday vacation cabin, they hit… something. Dad’s in denial, but the daughter wants to see what it was. What she finds is strange and squeaky and small. Like any kid with a soft spot for an injured creature would do, she brings it home to recuperate.
This is obviously a good idea and will lead to a very peaceful and merry Christmas for all.
Here’s the synopsis:
Hoping to reconnect over Christmas, a family of four travels to a remote island in the Danish archipelago, only to find it controlled by members of a strongly religious community living in balance with fierce creatures in the woods revealed to be… elves. Real, monstrous beings that inspired the folklore and myths we all know. When the girl in the family finds and brings home a baby elf, she inadvertently disrupts the balance and throws everyone on the island into a life-or-death battle for faith, family and pure survival.
The little elf looks like a cross between a potato and a Troll doll and is almost cute, but the bigger versions—which we only catch glimpses of in this trailer—are rather more terrifying, and the ominous humans even more so. Are the locals really living in harmony with the elves? Or is something much creepier going on here?
Pair this one with the delightful Rare Exports for a murder-elf holiday festival. Elves arrives on Netflix on November 28th.
